Alternative Careers | August 26, 2010 | ShareDo you get fascinated by automobiles? Do you enjoy stepping on the gas pedal and zooming away or just appreciate the power and the beauty of an automobile. Do you wish that someday you would want to drive or design one of those? Well then automobile engineering seems to be the best option for you. Automobile engineering deals with studying and understanding of all the aspects related to an automobile which starts from basic designing, engineering, operation, testing to its manufacturing. An automobile engineer deals not just with cars but everything related such as trucks, bikes, tractors, buses etc.
The current expansion and demand for vehicles has led to a sudden rise in the demand for automobile engineers. The automobile industry has been recognized centuries ago when the first car was designed using the power of steam and had a steering wheel in the form of a lever and could easily transport 2 people over long distances. Since then, the manufacturing of automobiles have revolutionized with Ford coming out with the first commercially available car by the name Ford Model T in the year 1909. Around 15 million cars were sold in the first 30 years itself which proved the interest of the general masses in a car. Since then the automobile industry has evolved and improved tremendously with more than a billion cars on the road in today’s world. Automobile engineering thus caters to every aspect related to an automobile i.e. design, develop, manufacture and repairing so that every new car designed and produced is better and can compete with the numerous other car manufacturers. And also with the current demand for eco friendly and fuel efficient vehicles, the engineers have a new challenge to face to leave a mark. Even though automobile engineering might be one of the most challenging careers and requires a lot of hard work, it requires more of interest and passion for automobile engineering.
Automobile engineering involves various features such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, designing etc as all these factors are required to develop a car. An automobile engineer has to design everything from the smallest of the mirrors and transmissions to the entire engine keeping in mind the aerodynamics, functionality, utility and safety of the vehicle while at the same time be economic.
To be an automobile engineer, it is important that a candidate is extremely strong in mathematics, physics, computer science and bio-technology. There are numerous institutes in India which provide B.Tech in automobile engineering. Candidates can also specialize in automobile engineering during their PG only if they graduated in Mechanical or Electrical engineering. Given below are some of the colleges which provide specialization in automobile engineering such as:
PDA College of Engineering, Karnataka
Nehru Samaraka Vidya Kendra Trust, Karnataka
College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai
Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai
Aritra Poddar
